Building Stronger Communities
North Kernow Community Housing
Community Land Trusts (CLTs) are a type of community-led housing which are set up and run by local people to develop and manage housing and other assets that are valuable to the community. CLTs are Community Benefit Societies that take on the long-term stewardship of homes. These homes are ‘asset locked’ meaning they must remain affordable and for the benefit of local people, forever.
There are nearly 250 CLTs in England and Wales, in both rural and urban settings. CLTs have proved a successful and innovative way of tackling the growing housing crisis.
North Kernow Community Housing is a community land trust that was set up in November 2022 by local residents who were concerned by the lack of genuinely affordable rented housing for local people. We are run by a board of volunteers as well as three part-time staff members.
Our aim is to work collaboratively with local communities to create the housing we need in the places we want. What’s more, our legal structure means any homes we build or acquire must remain affordable and for the benefit of local people, forever.
We have been successful in securing some initial funding through the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund. This funding is to support the development of Community Housing Action Teams (CHATs) in our partner parishes. More detail about our CHATs can be found on the Projects page.
